Why AC mould is a Far North Queensland problem

What you can safely do yourself

  • Rinse the filters every 4–6 weeks during cooling season — lukewarm water, a soft brush, dry fully before reinstalling.
  • Run the system on fan-only for 10–15 minutes after a long cooling cycle. That dries the coil and starves the mould of the moisture it needs.
  • Keep furniture and curtains clear of the indoor unit so airflow isn't disturbed.
  • Wipe the front fascia and louvres with a damp microfibre cloth.

What homeowner care can't reach is the evaporator coil and the blower wheel, which is where the bulk of the biofilm actually lives. Supermarket "AC cleaner" sprays mist the coil but don't touch the blower wheel at all, and pulling the unit apart without training risks bent fins, water damage and voided warranties.

What a professional deep clean involves

A proper indoor-unit clean is a 60–90 minute job per head. The short version:

  • Electrical isolation where applicable and a wall & floor protection bib around the unit
  • Fascia, filters and louvres removed and washed
  • Antibacterial / antifungal coil treatment, allowed to dwell
  • High-pressure flush of the coil into the catch bib
  • Blower wheel cleaned in place — this is the step most cheap services skip
  • Drain pan flushed; condensate line cleared so water exits cleanly
  • System reassembled, run-tested, and the indoor air sniff-tested

Done well, the difference is obvious the first time you turn the unit on — no smell, stronger airflow, and faster cool-down.

Can a dirty air conditioner make you sick?

It can contribute. When mould, dust and bacteria build up on the evaporator coil and blower wheel, the unit blows those particles into the room every time it runs. For most people that means stuffy noses, sore throats or worse allergies; for asthma, allergy and immunocompromised people the effect is larger. If symptoms appear shortly after the AC turns on and ease when it's off, the unit is a likely suspect — see a doctor for the medical side, and have the system inspected.

Does air conditioner mould go away on its own?

No. Mould needs moisture, organic dust and a dark surface — all of which a running AC provides. Once it's established on the coil or inside the blower wheel, it will keep regrowing until the biofilm is physically removed and the surfaces are sanitised.

Why does my AC smell musty when it first starts?

That 'dirty sock' smell is the classic signature of microbial growth on a wet evaporator coil. Air rushing through the coil at start-up lifts volatile compounds produced by mould and bacteria into the room. A surface wipe of the louvres won't fix it — the source is deeper inside the indoor unit.

Can I clean the inside of my split system myself?

You can safely rinse the filters and wipe the front louvres. Going further — pulling the fascia, cleaning the coil or removing the blower wheel — risks electrical damage, bent fins and voiding your warranty, and most DIY sprays don't reach the blower wheel where most of the biofilm lives. For a real clean, use a technician with the right chemicals and drop sheets.

Will a clean AC reduce my power bill?
